My second daughter, Jamie, was born this past Sunday, November 6, 2022. Thus, I will be noticeably quiet for a couple months as I spend my parental leave with my family! In a couple weeks, the Developer MVP 2023 application will go live and stay open through the end of this calendar year. Those things are related? How?

Graduating in the first recession of 2008 taught me some hard lessons. Previous advice from adults was just to “get a degree in something, you’ll figure out your career,” but the shift of entry-level jobs becoming so scarce in 2008 definitely proved that mentality to be outdated. So I carved out my path the hard way as I didn’t have access to developer bootcamps and consultant agencies producing bootcamps for admins.
What do I want to be when I grow up? I started working directly out of high school. I bounced around a bit trying to find the type of job that fit me. I was adamant at the time that I did not want a job sitting at a computer all day. At that age, though, I wasn’t sure what I wanted and didn’t have experience to guide me so I aimed for jobs that I had a talent for.
Starting out: A career in public service Tech consulting was never the plan. Originally, I went to college with the goal of attending law school and working my way into the realm of state politics. The dream: serve the people of my home state of North Carolina as a U.S. Senator. The work I do now on the Now Platform is somewhat of a second (or third?) career, but has fulfilled my original dream in a way that an elected office never could.
Finding where I belong My ServiceNow journey began in 2017, when my boss at the time mentioned that he would have to find a ServiceNow Administrator to hire. I jokingly responded with “Nah, don’t worry about it. I can figure it out.” He laughed and said, “You’re on.”
Those two words would open up so many opportunities for me, but I had to put in the time to get there.
